The Deception of Diets As Americans, we live in a microwave, instant access society. We want everything NOW. Even a lean, healthy body. But “healthy” and “fast” are oxymorons when it comes to changing your body and losing weight. Sure if you want to play the eternal yo-yo game of weight loss go ahead and follow the next big fad diet. It worked just as well as the last one you did last year. That’s why your trying this new one. Let’s face it. Diets are one of biggest scams on the market. They don’t work because they don’t change habits. And why don’t we want to change habits? Because it takes TIME. It takes PATIENCE. And it takes PERSISTENCY and CONSISTENCY. We would much rather pay upwards of $5000 for a 2-hour tummy tuck or a quick fix of liposuction than submit ourselves to a lifetime of healthy eating. But MANY clients—and you can ask your friendly neighborhood plastic surgeon—are repeat clients because their changes are just external. You haven’t changed what caused the overweight issue in the first place. We also think we can exercise our way to a lean body without changing how we eat. Another lie. Weight loss is 80% nutrition. You can do weekly marathons on your in-home treadmill and you still won’t lose that excess weight for good. Yeah, you may drop a few pounds, but without changing your habits, you can guarantee they’ll jump right back on with a few late night drive-thrus. So how do we do it. How do we change the seemingly eternal battle of the bulge? First, you have to change how you THINK about food. Food can’t be a means to comfort you. Go buy a dog for that. Food is how you take care of your body so it will take care of you. Next, if you are more than 30 pounds overweight, see your doctor to make sure there are no medical issues affecting your weight gain. Once he gives you the go, ask him/her about a food plan that practices MODERATION. Forget the grapefruit diet, the no-carb diet, or no-protein diet. Your body needs a healthy balance of everything. Just stay away from those nasty 4-letter word books that promise to be your 3-month savior. Next, exercise. Yes, Exercise. And it doesn’t have to be grueling and boring. Get out of the gym and go play tennis with your neighbor, play soccer with your kids, or go try a yoga class. Find something you LIKE and do it a minimum of 3 days a week, 30-60 minutes each day. And because VARIETY in exercise is the key to staying fit, EXPERIMENT. Try Tai-Chi in the park, strap on a helmet and go rollerblading, or work up a dancer’s sweat in Zumba. You’ll be amazed at how much fun fitness can really be. So bag the lies and the quick fixes that only frustrate you. Change how you think and you can make real changes that will last a lifetime. |
